Nigeria’s NCC Accelerates Push for Green Telecoms Amid Global Sustainability Shift
By Ejiro Umukoro
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is ramping up efforts to embed sustainability into the nation’s telecom sector through its Green Telecoms Initiative, aiming to align Nigeria’s digital infrastructure with global environmental standards. This strategy promises telecom operators up to 50% in cost savings while advancing eco-friendly operations across the industry.
Speaking at the recent Green Conference, NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida—represented by Head of Projects Mr. Shuaibu Swade—underscored the critical role of green practices in shaping Nigeria’s telecom future. “Telecommunications is not just the backbone of the digital economy; it must also lead in environmental responsibility,” Swade said. He emphasized that the expansion of digital infrastructure offers a unique opportunity for operators to slash carbon emissions by adopting energy-efficient technologies and renewable-powered base stations.
A cornerstone of the initiative involves replacing traditional diesel-powered generators with renewable energy sources, a move the Commission estimates could reduce operating expenses by 30% to 50%. Additional priorities include scaling renewable energy for telecom towers, enhancing e-waste management, and promoting infrastructure sharing among operators to minimize environmental impact.
The NCC is also pushing for stricter Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting standards to drive transparency and accountability across the sector. By leveraging digital technologies to enable remote work, smart solutions, and seamless digital services, the Commission believes the industry can significantly curb emissions tied to travel and other high-carbon activities.
Industry stakeholders at the conference highlighted the dual benefits of green telecom networks: reduced operational costs and strengthened connectivity, particularly in underserved rural areas. As Nigeria’s telecom sector grows, the NCC is urging operators to prioritize sustainability as both an economic imperative and an environmental necessity.
With its Green Telecoms Initiative, the NCC is charting a course for a more sustainable future, positioning Nigeria’s telecom industry at the intersection of connectivity and climate action.
