“Nimi” Takes Center Stage: Women Radio 91.7FM Unveils Innovative AI Radio Assistant Model

Lagos, Nigeria – Women Radio 91.7FM has launched its artificial intelligence (AI) model, “Nimi,” designed to provide real-time support and advice to women. The unveiling took place at the AI Radio Summit on Saturday, November 16, in Lagos.

Toun Okewale Sonaiya, CEO of Women Radio 91.7FM, emphasized the significance of AI in radio broadcasting, stating that it is not just the future but the present. She expressed pride in her team’s efforts in creating Nigeria’s first radio virtual assistant, “Nimi.”

“Nimi” is designed to offer a safe space for support and knowledge, providing women with a radio confidante and companion. The AI model is equipped to respond to questions and concerns in a Nigerian accent with human-like emotions.

The AI Radio Summit featured discussions on the role of AI in enhancing journalism and broadcasting. Experts highlighted the importance of ethics and professionalism in AI adoption, emphasizing the need for human oversight to maintain trust and prevent potential pitfalls.

Panelists, including Kayode Okikiolu of Channels TV, Nabilah Usman of RadioNow, and Motunrayo Alaka of Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, stressed the need for accountability, credibility, and trust in AI usage.

The summit also showcased practical applications of AI tools used at Women Radio to enhance programming, improve audience interaction, and streamline operations.

The AI Radio Summit Nigeria 2024 was an initiative of Women Radio 91.7FM, in collaboration with the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) and supported by the Voice Women Empowerment Foundation.
