Abuja, Nigeria – In a stirring call to action, African development experts and freedom advocates gathered at the maiden edition of the Conference of Freedom Advocates 2025, themed ‘Inspire’, to chart a new course for the continent’s prosperity. The event sparked a vibrant conversation on the power of ideas, liberty, and accountability in shaping Africa’s future.
Abdullah Tijani, Executive Director of the Liberalist Centre, set the tone, asserting that Africa’s poverty is inextricably linked to its lack of freedom. “The notion that Africa is poor because it is not free is a stark reality,” he said, underscoring the imperative of ideas and dialogue in fortifying liberty.
Iniobong Usen, Senior Program Coordinator at the International Budget Partnership, shared a poignant example of government interference in Nigeria’s economy, citing the fuel subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu in 2023. “The removal sparked widespread chaos, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in governance,” Usen said, emphasizing the importance of citizen-centric governance.
Journalist Muritala Abdullahi, a participant, reflected on the conference’s impact: “The gathering inspired me to champion a freer, more prosperous Africa. We explored critical sectors such as trade, security, and agriculture, highlighting the perils of excessive government control.”
Law graduate Habibat Sani echoed the sentiment, stressing the imperative of collective action to promote liberty, good governance, and citizen empowerment. “We must work together to create a society where every citizen has the freedom and opportunity to thrive,” she said.
As Africa grapples with developmental challenges, the Conference of Freedom Advocates 2025 has set the stage for a continental conversation on reimagining governance, markets, and individual freedoms. The event has ignited a beacon of hope, inspiring Africans to strive for a brighter future, where liberty, accountability, and prosperity are within reach.
