LightRay! Media strongly condemns the recent attack and reported rape of women and girls during a festival in Ozoro, Delta State.

The state This heinous act is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address gender-based violence (GBV) in the Niger Delta and across the country.

As the nation reflects on the progress made in advancing women’s rights following this month’s International Women’s Day, incidents like this highlight the deep challenges that remain. The vulnerability of women and girls to violence is a pressing issue that demands immediate action from all sectors of society.

The Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, which criminalizes acts such as rape with penalties as severe as life imprisonment, must be fully enforced. Those caught on video committing these crimes must face swift and decisive justice. Impunity cannot be tolerated, and justice for the victims must be prioritized.

LightRay Media calls on law enforcement agencies to investigate this incident thoroughly, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Furthermore, we advocate for the establishment of Gender-Based Violence Desks in police stations across the Niger Delta to provide sensitive and timely responses to such cases.

Key Recommendations:

  1. Immediate Justice: Law enforcement must act swiftly to investigate and prosecute all individuals involved in the attack.
  2. Support for Survivors: Establish safe houses and crisis centers to provide medical care, shelter, and psychological support for victims of GBV.
  3. Community Advocacy: Traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society must work together to eradicate harmful cultural practices that enable violence against women.
  4. Legislative Action: State governments in the Niger Delta must adopt the VAPP Act to ensure localized enforcement and protection for women and girls.
  5. Education and Awareness: Implement comprehensive sex education programs focused on consent, respect, and the consequences of GBV, while engaging men and boys in advocacy efforts.

LightRay Media also calls for collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and community leaders to address the root causes of GBV, including harmful traditions, inadequate education, and weak enforcement of protective laws.

A Call to Collective Action
The Niger Delta must unite to create a region where women and girls can live without fear of violence or discrimination. This is not just a women’s issue—it is a societal issue that requires the collective effort of everyone.

We urge all stakeholders to join in building a safer, more equitable society where women are not just protected, but empowered to thrive. Let us work together to end the scourge of gender-based violence and ensure that every woman and girl in the Niger Delta can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.
