“A Lesson in Grit and Innovation: My Unforgettable Encounter with Branson” by Hanu Fejiro Agbodje

“With Sir Richard Branson’s challenge ringing in my ears, I’m poised to share my entrepreneurial journey, inspiring others to harness innovation and grit in overcoming Africa’s unique challenges and unlocking its vast potential.”

As I reflect on my recent visit to Sir Richard Branson’s private Necker Island, I am reminded of the power of innovation and grit in overcoming challenges. The British billionaire’s influence on my life dates back to my childhood, when I read his book, “Losing My Virginity.” His story of perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit has stuck with me ever since.

During my unforgettable week on the island, Branson and I engaged in spirited conversations about vision, purpose, and the grit required to build in difficult times. We traded “war stories” about building businesses in hard places, from my experience launching Nigeria’s first crypto exchange to his own challenges with Virgin Atlantic in Nigeria.

What struck me most was Branson’s challenge to me as I was about to leave: “Promise me you’ll get that book out.” It was a reminder that our stories have the power to inspire and motivate others. As someone who has been inspired by Branson’s own story, I feel a sense of responsibility to share my own experiences with the world.

Our conversation also touched on the future of finance in emerging markets, where opportunity and innovation collide. The potential for blockchain and crypto to drive financial inclusion and economic growth is vast, and I believe that entrepreneurs like myself have a critical role to play in unlocking this potential.

Branson’s affection for Nigeria and his experiences operating in the country were also enlightening. Despite the challenges he faced, he still holds a deep affection for the country, and his story serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, innovation and perseverance can lead to success.

As I look back on my encounter with Branson, I am reminded that great things are often born from great challenges. My conversation with him has strengthened my resolve to stay focused, aligned, and continue building the future through digital and technology innovation in Africa.

When Sir Richard Branson asks you to write a book, you don’t say no. I am taking his challenge seriously and look forward to sharing my story with the world. The experience has left me with valuable lessons and insights that I believe will inspire and motivate others to pursue their own entrepreneurial journeys.
