Shining a Light on Corruption in the Health Sector: Ann Godwin’s Investigative Story Earns Recognition

Godwin’s report exposed corruption and patient exploitation at a Nigerian hospital. The report led to government intervention and sanctions against hospital staff.

Ann Godwin, a seasoned investigative journalist with The Guardian Newspaper, has been recognized for her outstanding work in exposing corruption in the health sector at the recently concluded Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism Awards.

Godwin’s exposé, “At UPTH’s ICU, Horror, Nightmare as Caregivers Exploit Sick and Dying Patients,” published in The Guardian on June 2, 2024, shed light on the horrific experiences of patients in the hospital’s ICU ward. The story exposed shady dealings by medical workers and challenges with oxygen supply, prompting the Federal Government to intervene and complete four oxygen manifold piping facilities in various locations within the hospital.

The report also attracted the attention of Grammy award winner Burna Boy, who paid medical bills for some indigent patients. The hospital management sanctioned erring staff, serving as a deterrent to others.

Godwin’s work was recognized at the 19th edition of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting (WSAR), where she emerged as the runner-up in the print category. Out of 291 entries, only 15 finalists emerged, with other winners including Jemilat Nasiru and Mansur Ibrahim from The Cable, and Olufunke Fayemi of Voice of Nigeria.

In her remarks, the Executive Director of WSCIJ, Motunrayo Alaka, emphasized the importance of investigative journalism in promoting transparency and good governance. “A vibrant civic space is the lifeblood of a healthy democracy,” she said.

Godwin expressed her gratitude to the WSCIJ and the judges, stating that the award would encourage her and other journalists to remain courageous and professional in their civic duties. “Journalists should not be deterred from embarking on impactful works that bring about desired changes in society, regardless of the daunting challenges we face in the country,” she said.
