ASABA, Delta State – FESTAC Africa 2027 will return to Nigeria, with Asaba and Delta State leading the 50th anniversary activations of the historic festival.

The announcement was made on May 25 at Mandela Park Resort during the Africa Day celebration, where Chairman of FESTAC Africa, Engr. Yinka Abioye, flagged off the countdown. The venue holds symbolic weight as the site of FESTAC ’77, hosted by Nigeria under Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Abioye said the 2027 edition is “not simply the return of a festival, but the revival of a continental vision.” He traced the festival’s origins to Dakar’s Négritude gathering in 1966, noting that after dormancy, FESTAC was revived in 2022 and has since been held annually across Africa. Dakar will host in October 2026 to mark 60 years since inception.

“Nigeria represents the heartbeat of African culture,” Abioye said. “Hosting FESTAC Africa 2027 honours history while embracing the future.” He outlined plans for the festival to function as a creative economy accelerator, tourism driver, and platform for cultural diplomacy and inclusion. The event is endorsed by UNESCO, AUDA-NEPAD, AfCFTA, and the Wole Soyinka Foundation, among others.

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka said the festival must be “a classroom, a marketplace, and a declaration that Africa speaks for itself.” Dr. Newton Jibunoh, host of Mandela Park Resort, said the location links Nigeria’s past struggles to its future cultural leadership.

LightRay! Media founder Lady Ejiro Umukoro added that FESTAC 2027 must “bridge heritage and innovation” and create economic opportunities for young Africans.

Organizers called on the Delta State government, traditional institutions, and private partners to support the festival. Satellite offices will be opened in partnership with DIDI Museum and Prince Tunde Odunlade Museum to widen participation across Nigeria.

The next edition will hold in Dakar, Senegal, in October 2026.
