LightRay Media’s Safe Journalism for Women: Policy and Charter

Recognizing the critical role women journalists play in promoting free and independent media, and acknowledging the disproportionate risks they face, we commit to creating a safe and supportive environment for women journalists.

Article 1: Purpose and Scope

This policy aims to prevent and respond to violence, harassment, and intimidation against women journalists, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Article 2: Definitions

  • Violence: Physical, verbal, or psychological harm, including online harassment.
  • Women journalists: Including freelancers, contractors, and staff.

Article 3: Principles

  1. Zero tolerance for violence and harassment.
  2. Respect for women journalists’ rights and dignity.
  3. Prompt response to incidents.
  4. Confidentiality and support for victims.

Article 4: Prevention Measures

  1. Training on safety, self-defense, and digital security.
  2. Risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  3. Secure communication channels.
  4. Female-only transportation options.

Article 5: Reporting and Response

  1. Designated reporting mechanism.
  2. Prompt investigation and action.
  3. Support services (counseling, medical aid).
  4. Protection from retaliation.

Article 6: Accountability

  1. Internal accountability mechanism.
  2. Annual reporting on incidents and actions.
  3. External review and evaluation.

Article 7: Collaboration

  1. Partnership with women’s organizations and media groups.
  2. Information sharing and best practices.
  3. Joint advocacy efforts.

Article 8: Monitoring and Evaluation

  1. Regular monitoring of incidents.
  2. Evaluation of policy effectiveness.
  3. Annual review and updates.

Charter for Women Journalists’ Safety

We Commit To:

  1. Uphold the principles of safety, respect, and dignity.
  2. Create a culture of zero tolerance for violence.
  3. Support and empower women journalists.
  4. Collaborate with stakeholders for change.

Responsibilities:

  1. Employers: Provide safe working conditions and support.
  2. Colleagues: Promote respect and inclusivity.
  3. Governments: Enforce laws and protect journalists.
  4. Women journalists: Prioritize self-care and seek support.

Long-Term Strategies

Provide Confidentiality and Support Services For women journalists experiencing violence or harassment through direct lines of communication and report:

In the long run a comprehensive implementation plan with the establishment of a women journalists’ safety committee setup for counseling services emergency assistance is now in the works. From the final quarter of 2024 to 2025 to conduct regular training and workshops and to Collaborate with international organizations such as the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), UNESCO’s Gender and Media Programme, including international, national and local women’s organizations.

Implementation:

This policy will be reviewed and updated annually.

This policy and charter serve as a starting point for creating a safe and supportive environment for women journalists. Regular review and updates will ensure its effectiveness.
