Urban Radio Enugu: EFCC’s Heavy-Handed Tactics Spark Outrage, Threat to Press Freedom

The National Guild of Private Broadcast Managers condemns the invasion of Urban Radio 94.5FM Enugu by operatives of the Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 6:15 pm during the live broadcast of “Prime Time.” The EFCC operatives allegedly stormed the premises without proper identification, forcibly gained entrance, and took away presenter Mrs. Favour Ekoh and other staff.

Black Monday
The EFCC operatives, without a search warrant or official invitation, demanded Mrs. Ekoh follow them to their office while she was live on air. They allegedly destroyed broadcasting equipment to cut short the live broadcast.

Urban Radio 94.5FM has no prior dealings with Leverage Index Ltd, save for airing its products and services. However, Leverage Index Ltd sponsored a segment of Mrs. Ekoh’s show, “The Powder Room.”

N700 Million Ponzi Scheme Allegation
Mrs. Ekoh was accused of defrauding victims in an alleged Ponzi scheme. The Guild states that even if true, it would be irrational for Mrs. Ekoh to continue her duties on radio while committing fraud.
